Energy is fundamental for social and economic growth but the current consumption rate of fossil fuels has serious implications for environmental sustainability. The ultimate objective is to achieve near zero emissions from the utilisation of energy, world wide. CSIRO has accepted the challenge to play a significant role in achieving this essential national and international goal.

In addressing the challenges facing the continued use of fossil fuels in a carbon-constrained world and the move to a renewables energy based economy, CSIRO Energy Technology is undertaking research across a broad range of areas.

These include:

• low-emissions technologies for fossil fuel use and efficient coal production;
• renewable energy systems and potential use of hydrogen in the energy cycle;
• distributed energy generation and energy storage;
• reducing the environmental consequences of energy use; and
• the future of energy and energy modelling.
