Energy and Environment

Developing strategies to protect and clean our air and water

Vehicle emissions are a major
contributor to greenhouse gases

CSIRO Energy Technology has developed new tools and technologies to better assess, manage and mitigate the environmental impacts of industrial activity on our air and water quality.

We work closely with the coal, energy, transport and minerals sectors to monitor the impact these industries have on air and water quality and examine their links to human health. The collection of this information enables us to develop better systems and technologies that not only improve environmental management but also maintain industrial efficiency.

Core competencies:

  • air sampling and analysis;
  • studying reactions of air contaminants and modelling contaminant plume behaviour;
  • gas cleaning;
  • greenhouse gas emissions from coal mining and other sources;
  • spontaneous combustion in spoil piles and open cut coal mines;
  • sampling and analysis of waters from pristine environments;
  • ultratrace analysis of heavy metals, mercury, arsenic and selenium using Clean Laboratory techniques;
  • developing and applying sensitive aquatic bioassays;
  • identifying toxicity and its chemical causes in effluents, sediments and waters;
  • sediment quality research;
  • ecological risk assessments; and
  • interdisciplinary expertise in chemistry, microbiology, ecotoxicology and ecology.
